Top 3 Life Lessons I Wish I Knew in my 20s

Updated: Mar 6

"Picture this: You're 20, standing at the crossroads of adulthood, fueled by dreams and the anticipation of what lies ahead. Now, imagine if you possessed a secret blueprint that could unlock the doors to a purposeful, fulfilled, and successful life.

Ten years ago, I was like you. Standing at the crossroads of life, trying to figure out what to do next after my graduation. As a graduate with honors, my heart was filled with hopes and dreams of a better future for me and my family.

But, it turned out that having hopes and dreams are not enough to make your life a success. Being busy is different from being productive.

Yes, I was so busy with a lot of stuff. Job, small business, ministry, relationship, and other daily activities. Until one day I became tired. I asked myself, "What is the point of being engrossed with all of these things, where am I heading? I am so occupied, yet I feel so empty."

Lines of Life's Choices
Which lines best illustrate your daily choices?

I learned this illustration from Dean Graziosi. If you want to live effectively, you can't be doing things that are not aligned to your ultimate goal. Your job must lead to where you are heading, so with your business, your ministry and your daily activities. Your choice of friends and relationships must all align with what you want to achieve in life.

Looking back, there are top three crucial lessons that I wish I had known then – lessons that could have paved the way for a more purposeful, fulfilled, and ultimately happier life. These life lessons will protect you from stress, competition and emptiness. These lessons revolve around understanding one's purpose, cultivating a clear vision, and unlocking one's full potential.

The Power of Purpose:

At 20, many of us are embarking on the journey of self-discovery, trying to figure out who we are and what we want from life. Little did I know that having a sense of purpose can be the guiding star in this journey.

Save your life from the stress of making money or career competition. Rather, seek for your purpose. It gives life meaning; it's the compass that directs our actions and decisions. Your sense of direction inspires you to enjoy your job and pursue a thriving career.

Whether it's a passion for helping others, creating art, or making a positive impact on the world, understanding and aligning with our purpose brings a deep sense of fulfillment.

Actionable Tip: Take the time to reflect on your values, interests, and what truly excites you. Consider how you can align your daily activities and your job with a broader purpose that resonates with your authentic self.

Crafting a Vision:

While purpose provides the why, a vision serves as the roadmap for how to get there.

At 20, it's easy to get caught up in the immediate demands of life – education, career, relationships – without considering the bigger picture. Having a car or house or pursuing another level in your career are not visions. These are goals.

Having a vision is like having a destination in mind; it guides our choices and actions, helping us stay focused on reaching our dreams. It provides clarity in times of confusion and acts as a source of motivation during challenging moments.

Do not just work to survive the day. Work because you see something in the future.

Actionable Tip: Envision where you want to be in 5, 10, or even 20 years. Set specific, measurable goals that align with your purpose, and break them down into actionable steps. Regularly revisit and revise your vision as you grow and evolve.

Unlocking Your Potential:

Potential is the untapped reservoir of capabilities within each of us.

At 20, it's crucial to recognize that personal development is an ongoing journey. Investing time and energy into developing your skills, expanding your knowledge, and honing your strengths not only enhances your capabilities but also opens doors to new opportunities. Embracing a growth mindset allows you to see challenges as opportunities for learning and growth, paving the way for a more fulfilling and successful life.

Take time to love yourself. Do what you love and develop your passion.

Actionable Tip: Identify your strengths and areas for improvement. Set aside time for continuous learning, whether through formal education, workshops, or self-directed study. Surround yourself with mentors and like-minded individuals who can support your growth.
